/Child Psychoanalysis-The Analytic Approach

Child Psychoanalysis

“Only in child analysis proper is the whole range of therapeutic possibilities kept available for the child”

Anna Freud

Child Psychoanalysis

Children and adolescents who are struggling with severe mood swings, anxiety, and disruptive behaviors may benefit from an immersive therapeutic experience with an analyst.

The Analytic Approach

Developed by Anna Freud and Melanie Klien, child analysis provides children and adolescents with the opportunity to meet three to four times a week to develop a unique relationship with the analyst, who offers a supportive and nonjudgmental space for them to gain a more mature understanding of their thoughts and feelings. Their enhanced self-awareness allows them to consider their feelings and articulate their concerns rather than acting them out with self-destructive behaviors.

Parents meet with the analyst weekly to support their efforts to understand their child's unique qualities and engage in limit setting and encouragement with confidence, understanding, and love.

Children remain in analysis for one to two years to integrate the orientation to self-awareness with their developmental changes, reinforcing a secure and confident self-identity.
